Spend the Time and Money to have your Book Professionally Edited

Over the past four years I have written two techno-thriller books, the first titled NANO SURVEILLANCE, and the second titled WATERKILL. In both cases I released the books without having them professionally edited. I paid a very high price with NANO SURVEILLANCE in regards to negative reviews for editorial reasons. With WATERKILL, I went to great pains to avoid the same review wrath by having a dozen friends and family members review the book and provide feedback prior to its release. However, again I did not spend the money to have WATERKILL professionally edited. Sadly, the friends and family editing feedback route was still insufficient. Though the WATERKILL reviews were better, there was still that occasional reader/reviewer that found editorial issues with the book, and as a result, skewered me because of it.

Alas, after about 4 or 5 of those negative reviews, I took WATERKILL off the market and spent two months and paid nearly $2K to have the book professionally line edited. Without a doubt after the second release of the book the results, in regards to critically negative reviews due to editing, were much better. After 78 amazon reviews, WATERKILL enjoys a 4.3 ranking, with virtually no additional comments about editorial flaws in the book.

So for those who are thinking about self-publishing a book, I highly recommend you spend the time and money up front to have the book professionally edited. Though I have not recouped the cost of paying for the professional edit to date, at least I sleep better at night knowing I am not going to get that picky reader who rips the book for basic editing issues.

Dave Henson is akin to Dirk Pitt of Clive Cussler Fame

Some reviewers of WATERKILL and NANO SURVEILLANCE have commented that Dave Henson reminds them of Dirk Pitt, the protagonist in many of Clive Cussler's books.

Their comment is not surprising to me on account of two reasons; (1) I have read nearly every Clive Cussler book that has ever come out, and (2) I wanted to create a protagonists in my books that were as equally intelligent and strong as Dirk Pitt. However, instead of being an expert in oceanography, I chose to have Dave be a "techie" with a penchant for aviation, two of my personal traits.

So if you are a fan of Clive Cussler and his Dirk Pitt series, then you might want to pick up WATERKILL or NANO SURVEILLANCE.

Had a Great Book Signing Event at Bayswater Books Today

United States Unevenly Prepared for a Virus Epidemic or Bioterrorism Attack

A recent state-by-state analysis of the United States preparedness for dealing with a virus epidemic or bioterrorism attack shows that it’s a mixed bag between the states. The national index score was only 6.7 out of 10, with the northeast states and the upper Midwest states fairing the best. The south and much of the northwest states, however, were in need of significant improvement. The lack of preparedness in the United States and other countries around the world in dealing with virus epidemics and bioterrorism attacks was highlighted in my latest book WATERKILL. In particular, it discussed the vulnerability of municipal water supplies being sabotaged by terrorists, and that the need for heightened security and testing at public water treatment facilities was imperative.

Though the Forbes’ article showed the level of preparedness in dealing with major public health crisis to vary significantly from state to state, the overall preparation at the national level showed some improvement. So at least we are moving in the right direction, and hopefully we will continue to stay ahead of Mother Nature and the terrorists.

Nanotechnology Used in the Carrying of Drugs in the Human Body

Much of the science around my latest book titled WATERKILL involves the use of nanotechnology. In particular, it centers around the use of nanobots, if you will, to deliver an engineered biological disease to infect people.  

The recent article in Phys.org titled “Meet the Nanomachines that could Drive a Medical Revolution” discuss in detail the use of nanomachines, or nano-vehicles, in the carrying of drugs throughout the human body. It explains, for example, the injection of drugs into nano-size magnetic shell structures that can then be inserted into the human body, and via external magnets be guided through the body to targeted areas. Once positioned into a particular area of the body, the magnetic shell structures can be heated to expand and rupture, such that they then release their drug contents into the targeted area of the body.

The article also goes on to explain that the same nanotechnology technique is also being evaluated for medical imaging. Again, by guiding the nanoparticles into certain tissue areas of the body, and then scanning the body with an MRI machine, the nanoparticles could help to better highlight medical problems such as diabetes.

I just wanted to report that I hired a professional editor and she completed a line edit on Waterkill. It took a month of her time (21 years as a free lance editor), and another couple weeks of mine to review the edits and format the book and re-release. Waterkill Continues to Receive Excellent Reviews

After 34 reviews on Amazon, Waterkill has an excellent ranking of 4.6 stars. See Waterkill on Amazon here. In addition, all but one of the reviews have been very positive. For some reason one reviewer seemed to have an ax to grind with the book. But oh well, to each his/her own.

The reviews and rankings have also been similarly as good on Goodreads.com and Barnes and Noble, with 4.47 and 5.0 rankings on 19 votes and 4 votes, respectively. Below is a typical review.

Sales, however, have not been so robust. But at least they've been steady with some sales each day. Somehow I need to change the sales metric though. Very frustrating to have a plethora of excellent reviews, but limited sales. If anyone reading this blog post has any constructive advice, I'm all ears.

Report of Middle Eastern Men Arrested on Border Carrying Steel Cylinders

A very interesting article came out yesterday titled "Middle Eastern Men Arrested Near Mexican Border with Steel Cylinders". See the article from Judicial Watch.

Can't help but wonder what they may be carrying in those steel cylinders. For anyone that hasn't read my new book WATERKILL. They should. What WATERKILL suggests as a possibility may very well be arriving on our country's doorstep sooner than we think.
